MECO HOLD ANNUAL PUBLIC IFTAR A diverse group of 130 people attended MECO's annual Iftar function on Sunday, 8 October 2006 at the Summertown Hall in North Oxford. In addition to a mesmerizing 50-minute lecture by Imam Luqman Ali on the spiritual and social significance of fasting in Islam and an equally riveting question and answer session, the participants observed maghrib (sunset) prayers before enjoying a mouth-watering selection of food from all over the Islam world. Muslims broke the fast with people from different backgrounds, including Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus and those of no organised religion. This made it a truly exceptional interfaith event during these times of heightened political tensions and community friction. | INTERFAITH SERVICE IN MEMORY OF LONDON BOMBINGS A multifaith service was organised by MECO in memory of those innocent people who died in the London bombings on 7th July 2005. During the service, 52 candles were lit and the names of those who were killed were read out. MECO reiterates its view that this indiscriminate assault on and murder of innocent people going about their daily lives was completely contrary to the pristine teachings of the Holy Qur’an.
